(28 Sep 2017) Hundreds of people gathered outside the Hong Kong government's headquarters on Thursday to mark the third anniversary of the Occupy pro-democracy protests. The three co-founders of the Occupy Movement, Benny Tai, Chan Kin Man and Reverend Chu Yiu Ming returned to the site outside the Hong Kong government's headquarters in the Admiralty district, where protesters occupied for 79 days. Banners, yellow umbrellas reappeared in scenes reminiscent of the protests in 2014. Participants including lawmakers and activists stood still in a three-minute silence, the moment riot police fired tear gas at protesters. It was the first time this annual event has taken place without any of the three student leaders who sparked the original protests three years ago. The three were sent to prison last month for their roles in huge pro-democracy protests nearly three years earlier, in a sign that tolerance for dissent is waning in the Chinese-ruled former British colony.
