Almost 140 years ago a German, Karl Benz, invented the modern car. That breakthrough was emblematic of his country’s technological progress. Having been a late developer when compared to Great Britain, Germany was becoming a global leader in the ‘Second Industrial Revolution’. Over the following century and a half - and despite defeat in two world wars - German manufacturing became the envy of the world. As recently as this century it was the world’s number one exporter, and its industrial success was vital to European integration. ‘Made in Germany’ was a sentence that mattered. German cars were synonymous with engineering excellence. But now, just two months before its most important general election in decades, the country finds itself in a precarious position: economic growth has stalled, Chinese firms are taking market share, and cheap energy from Russia has been severed. The old common sense no longer works. So what will happen to this would-be world power? Is its economic model over? And what does Germany’s story mean for the future of Europe? Joining Aaron to discuss all of that is Wolfgang Münchau. Wolfgang covered European and German current affairs for over 25 years at the Financial Times. He now writes for the New Statesman, and hosts the podcast ‘Euro Briefing’. His latest book, ‘Kaput!’, examines the collapse of Germany’s economic model - and where it goes next.
