Continuity or Individual Imprint - Viola Mautsch

How Did Karin Hahn-Hissink Work in the Field? An Analysis of Her Methodology Based on Her Inheritance at the Frobenius Institute Large-scale collection and research expeditions shaped German ethnology in the 1950s and 1960s. As one of those Karin Hahn-Hissink organized a major expedition to the northeast of Bolivia from 1952 to 1954. While her expedition aligned with the prevailing trends of the time, she employed her own detailed documentation methods in the field, distinct from those of her male colleagues at the time. This lecture presents the results of my research on Hahn-Hissink’s inheritance at the Frobenius Institute and pursuits to reconstruct her relationships with collaborators in the field based on her records. Through my research in the Takana region in 2023 I illustrate the relevance of these findings for the Takana today.
