The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu rose to 38 on Thursday and at least 100 others were still undergoing treatment in hospital. The state government has announced Rs 10 lakh assistance to relatives of those dead and Rs 50,000 assistance to those who are being treated in hospitals. Ministers Udhayanidhi Stalin and EV Velu reached Kallakurichi to meet the injured in hospital. "132 people have been admitted for treatment and 94 people are getting treatment. So far 38 people have died. 22 people in Kallakurichi GH, 3 in Puducherry Jipmer hospital, 8 in Salem GH and 4 in Villupuram GH have died. The government's priority is to save those in hospital," Velu said. Commenting on Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami's allegations of lack of medical facilities in the hospital, he said, "This morning, the Leader of Opposition complained that there aren't enough medicines for treatment here. There are enough medicines here and we have appointed one doctor and two nurses for every patient." On action taken by the state government, he said many policemen have been suspended because they felt that this incident would not have happened if the police here had handled it properly." "This case has been shifted from regular police to CBCID and the investigation has started under five teams.
