Today's performance features Mendelssohn's "Venetian Gondola Song," a piece filled with Italian longing and a touch of melancholy. This week, Megumi Tanno performs Felix Mendelssohn's "Venetian Gondola Song" (Op. 19, No. 6) on the 1825 Krämer fortepiano. Megumi Tanno shares three fascinating insights: 1. The Shadow of Mendelssohn: Despite his happy life, why does his music always carry a "shadow"? 2. Nowhere vs. Now Here: A philosophical look at the melody. It sounds like it comes from "nowhere" (another dimension), yet it exists powerfully "now here" in this moment. 3. The 1825 Fortepiano: Built in the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, this piano has no iron frame. Its shallow touch creates a "world of pianissimo" impossible on modern instruments. Megumi also highlights the instrument itself, built in 1825, the same year the first railway opened in England. Unlike modern pianos born from the Industrial Revolution, this wooden piano lacks an iron frame. Its shallow touch limits volume but invites rich imagination in the world of "pianissimo" (soft sounds).
