*This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only. If your pet is sick, take them to see your local veterinarian for the care they need* (Disclaimer) Hi everyone! I hope everyone is well and your doggy is in good heath. Today we are talking about a torn ACL in a dog. Your veterinarian may call the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) a CCL (Cranial cruciate ligament). The ACL and CCL are the same thing. Humane doctors and veterinarians have different anatomy terms, but the ligament is very similar. The ACL in a dog can tear or be torn just like in humans. When a dog tears his/her ACL it be very uncomfortable. The knee or stifle joint is no longer stable without the ACL keeping it stable. The tibia will slide forward away from the femur, because the ACL is no longer there to stabilize it. When the ACL tears the knee joint can become swollen and inflamed. A veterinarian will recommended one of two procedures commonly. 1) For small dogs and dogs that are not as active, the extra capsular procedure is a great option. During the surgery the veterinarian will clean out the knee joint. This means they will remove the torn ACL and any other soft tissue structures that have been damage will be corrected. Once the knee joint is healthy, the vet will then close the joint and stabilize the knee with the extra capsular procedure. The veterinarian will drill a hole in the tibia. A thick piece of suture will then be passed through the hole in the tibia and around the sesamoid bone behind the femur. This thick suture will be clamped and tied to stabilize the knee. 2) The other option is the TPLO, Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy. This is a great procedure for big and active dogs. The veterinarian will cut the tibia and change the angle of the knee by rotating the cut tibial bone. The veterinarian will then skew a plate to the cut bone and correct the ACL tear. The veterinarian will open the stifle of knee joint in this procedure too and remove the ruptured or torn ACL and corrected any other soft tissue structures. After surgery, the veterinarian will place the dog on pain medications like NSAIDs for inflammation. Rest for at least 6-8 weeks is needed to allow the knee to heal. *As always guys, this content is for education and entertainment purposes only.
