"Tank Man" by Jeff Widener depicts the Unknown Rebel who dared to stand in front of a column of Tanks of the Chinese military on Tiananmen Square in Beijing after the Protests of 5 June 1989. His nonviolent action forced a row of Type 59 Tanks to a dramatic halt. While his standoff was also captured on video, this single picture of the protester taken by the Associated Press photographer Jeff Widener was widely published and quickly became a symbol of peaceful protest against the Chinese Government.
