Clingmans Dome is the tallest mountain in the Smoky Maintains and it also holds the distinction of being the highest summit along the Appalachian trail and the western terminus of the mountains to sea trail which ends in the outer banks of North Carolina. This trail is one of the most popular trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At 6644 feet, Clingmans dome is the third highest peak East of the Mississippi River. The observation tower, on the mountain offers 360 degree panoramic views, of the surrounding mountains, with up to 100 miles in visibility, on clear days. This is the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. This visit was a snow covered Clingmans Dome. The icy conditions are not often seen by most visitors to the mountain, as the mountain access road is closed to car traffic during late fall to early spring. This is a must do day hike, on a clear day, when visiting the Smoky Mountains. This is one of the top things to do in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. So if you are looking for a National Park Adventure, and you will be visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, then hiking the smokies is a must do. This is a short day hike and provides amazing panoramic views of the Smoky Mountain in all directions, plus you are just a few yards from the Appalachian Trail.
