There are actually 18 pieces in the collection but 'Medium Rock' requires two players, so I have not included it. There are copious notes by the composer at the end of the book and the pieces are arranged roughly in order of difficulty, though with an eye to contrast. This is a magnificent collection, one of the very best of its kind, and I would strongly recommend it. A few of the pieces have appeared on exam syllabuses (e.g. 'Raindrops' at grade 3) and others have been immensely popular among learners (such as 'Big Band Tune', 'Raindrops' and 'The Spanish Guitar Player'). There are some minor issues: the notation of swing isn't always clear - in 1984 this was not yet standardised - and the English used in the titles is sometimes a little odd. There is some awkward writing (e.g. in 'Break/Fill in') and a few of the pieces are probably not going to find many enthusiasts, not because they are weak, but because they have niche appeal (e.g. 'The Ruined Record'). It is astonishing how little the music has dated. Forty years on it sounds as fresh and witty as ever. I recorded 'Samba', 'Melancholy' and 'The Somersault King' some years ago, but most of the recordings date from late 2023 and 2024. The recording of 'Raindrops' is a different one from that uploaded as a separate piece (somewhat faster).
