Here we see the long promenade of De Haan, a town of around 5,000 inhabitants. The town has a continuous sandy beach and is located roughly in the middle of the Belgian coastline, which stretches from France to the Netherlands. The town center of De Haan that can be seen here today only dates back to 1889. The then King of Belgium granted permission to build on this section of dunes under a number of conditions. For example, a certain building height could not be exceeded and the houses had to be detached and surrounded by gardens. This can still be seen in the townscape today, as De Haan is pretty much the only place on the Belgian North Sea coast that does not have any high-rise buildings near the beach. A central point of the town is the stop of the coastal tram Kusttram, which connects all the towns on the Belgian North Sea coast. It became a catalyst in the development of the region, as shortly after it opened in the 19th century, the first hotel was opened near the tram stop. Every Wednesday, the Driftsweg becomes a weekly market. This street runs directly parallel to the tram line and offers locals and tourists the opportunity to stock up on fresh food and other items. The focus is clearly on food, which you can buy here. It is a real spectacle that starts in the early hours of the morning and lasts until midday. The Driftsweg itself seems to separate the modern new town from the historic seaside resort. There are many houses lined up next to each other, there are a few shops on the ground floor and residential areas above. Overall, this is a beautiful street that is worth walking down even regardless of the weekly market. This is the Kusttram stop in the center of De Haan. With a route length of 67 kilometers, it connects all the places on the Belgian coast and is the longest tram line in the world. The route is double-tracked throughout and runs from De Panne on the French border to Knokke on the Dutch border. If you want to travel the entire route, it will take you about two and a half hours. The trains usually run every ten minutes. If you are a train enthusiast or are travelling with a child who loves trains, you may find yourself spending more time here at this historic site than on the beach. Another historic site is this house. Looking at the first floor, you might think Albert Einstein still lives here. In fact, he lived here from March to September 1933. Immediately after the Hitler regime came to power, the Nobel Prize winner moved here from his German homeland before emigrating further. In his honour, a bench with Albert Einstein has been set up in De Haan's city park; anyone who wants to can sit next to him and philosophise about physics or the weather. It is fun to stroll through the streets of De Haan. I felt very comfortable here and, despite its clear tourist character, it was a really relaxed and cosy place that I was able to get to know. Many beautiful houses from the Belle Époque stand side by side here and make you dream of the good old days. You can also dream on the beach. As you can see at the beginning, the place has a continuous sandy beach. There is also a separate area down here as a playground, literally a huge sandpit. Here, too, you can clearly see that high-rise buildings are prohibited, which is why the promenade creates a harmonious and tasteful picture. It is also worth spending time here in the evenings. The coastline runs west, the direction in which the sun sets in the evening. Anyone who has the time and leisure to be here at this time will be amazed by the sound of the sea, the song of the wind and the beauty of the red sun.
