As a parent, one of the most important responsibilities is knowing when an illness is minor and when it may be a sign of something more serious. Children often get coughs, colds, and fevers as part of growing up, but there are certain times when these symptoms should raise concern and prompt medical attention—especially in newborns. Coughs and colds are common in children and usually resolve on their own. Most of the time, a runny nose, mild cough, or low-grade fever simply indicates a viral infection that the body will fight off naturally. However, if a cough becomes very severe, persistent, or is accompanied by wheezing, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, it could signal a more serious condition such as pneumonia or asthma flare-ups. Fever is another symptom parents often face. In older babies and children, a mild fever is usually the body’s normal response to infection. But with newborns (under 2–3 months of age), any fever—generally defined as a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher—should be taken very seriously. Infants at this age are more vulnerable to infections, and even a low-grade fever could indicate something significant that requires immediate medical evaluation. #parents #health #children
