Pedro Sanchez is Spain’s left-wing Prime Minister who has presided over a booming economy and has made a name for himself by speaking out against Israeli’s genocide in Gaza. This September he was in London visiting his counterpart Keir Starmer, where they agreed on a post-Brexit bilateral deal focusing on Gibraltar. Yet that is where the similarities end, as Sanchez has taken a different strategy from his fellow centre-left leader in London. Spanish commentators have dubbed his approach as ‘Sanchismo’ - standing up to Trump and Israel from within NATO, calling for replacement migration despite the rise of the hard-right Vox party, and pouring money into public services despite debt being over 100% of GDP. But Sanchez is also under pressure domestically with corruption allegations from within his inner circle. Can the socialist leader remain in power and will his high-stakes gambit will pay off.
