So there is a lot I want to talk about with this piece, so buckle up. To start off, this will be my first video of three on this song, with this one being the beginning. The next one will come around the same time next month when I’ve practiced it more. Below, I’ve put timestamps and rated how difficult each part is for me and why, with 0 being easy and 10 being Animenz. (0:00 - 0:27) - This part I have no problems playing consistently now, but I still feel like the tone could be improved a bit. 3/10 (0:28 - 0:44) - This part makes me cry. I feel like I just can’t relax my fingers here to properly articulate the notes. The wall truly stands tall right now, but I will hopefully have it on lock by the final recording. Also, the part before the wall I’m planning to make sound closer to the original, so it should be ready for the next vid. 9/10 (0:44 - 1:01) - I like how relaxing this part is, and I’m considering adding more phrasing here to give it more texture. It’s a nice calm before the storm section. The area of improvement will be the transition because I made a mistake there, but overall it’s not difficult once you get a feel for it. 3/10 (1:02 - 1:15) - My favourite part of the piece. I absolutely love the way this chorus was arranged. Yes, this part is difficult, and deceptively so. For me, the hardest thing about it is the left-hand run down. I suspect it’s because my focus is on the right hand since I want to accent the melody, and I forget the left hand exists. 7/10 (1:16 - 1:26) - This part I just need to really practice the rhythm for the left hand. I tend to ignore practicing this section because it feels very unfun to play, but for the next recording it’s one of my top priorities. 8/10 (1:27 - 1:37) - Nice little break after the previous parts. Though I do need to actually learn the notes here because right now I’m playing how I originally learned it, which was wrong. Still a fairly easy part. 2/10 (1:38 - 1:52) - This is the hardest part of the song for me. When I’m learning, the two things I try to focus on are consistency and precision, and this part fails at both. I absolutely despise the left hand with every fibre of my being. Some days I can play it somewhat okay, today was not one of those days. 11/10 (1:53 - 2:06) - I’m honestly impressed that I managed to play it the way I did here because I can definitely tell this is the part that made me reset way too many recordings. Right now I can play it at around 70% precision and 30% consistency, so for the next video I hope to improve both, especially on that right-hand run down. 9/10 (2:07 - 2:15) - This part I’ve recently begun relearning because, back when I first learned this piece, I learned the notes wrong (stupid me, massive skill issue). Since I’m relearning it now, I feel like with the next vid it will sound much better. 5/10 (2:16 - 2:26) - Comically enough, looking through the recording, the runs looked alright but how did I mess up the trills that badly? They looked okay initially. Definitely something I need to look into next. 9/10 (2:27 - 2:38) - This part is interesting because, on one hand, I don’t think it’s as difficult as people make it out to be, and on the other, I completely forgot how to control the sustain pedal here and played at too high a tempo. I am quite consistent with it though, just need more precision. 6/10 (2:39 - 2:41) - I think this is the point where my hands really started hurting. Normally it would be a bit later, but since I recently had the flu, my muscles were already aching. This part isn’t too bad to play, but I do need to practice it more for the muscle memory to kick in. 5/10 (2:42 - 3:04) - How did I make mistakes in this part? My previous recording literally had the entire chorus similar to the left hand here. Honestly, a massive skill issue on my end it’s not even that difficult. I did add some extra notes on the right hand before the second wall because it felt right, but I’ll consider improving or changing it in the next recording. 4/10 (3:05 - 3:12) - This part doesn’t seem that bad when you play it on its own, but around this point my hands felt like they were going to fall off. I’m honestly scared of people who can play this part with no mistakes. Right now I’m not missing the note spam, but I just need to make it more precise and improve the overall flow. 8/10 (3:06 - 3:26) - Those octave jumps are brutal, but for some reason I can play them fairly consistently. Still need to improve precision. I think it comes down to me being self-taught. I only recently started thinking, “oh hey, you do know the melody is in the right hand… right?” because before I always prioritised learning the left hand first. 7/10 (3:27 - 3:48) - This part is fairly easy, but still needs a bit more practice it seems. Not much to say here. 2/10 TLDR: First video, lots of mistakes, but I managed to play all the parts.
