Ha Dong is a district located in the inner city area of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. This district is situated between the Nhue River and the Day River, approximately 12 km southwest of the city center. Historically, Ha Dong was a city belonging to Ha Tay Province and served as its provincial capital. Today, Ha Dong is the location of several administrative offices of the city of Hanoi and is known for its rapid economic and social development. To the east, the district borders Thanh Tri District. To the west, it borders the districts of Quoc Oai, Hoai Duc, and Chuong My. To the south, it borders Thanh Oai District. To the north, it borders Nam Tu Liem District (with boundaries defined by Dai Mo and Trung Van roads) and Thanh Xuan District (with boundaries defined by Nguyen Trai, Tran Phu, and Luong Ngoc Quyen roads). Ha Dong, once the center of the old Ha Tay Province, has a rich history and cultural heritage. With its strategic location at the southwest gateway to Hanoi, Ha Dong has long been known as a land steeped in tradition, closely associated with the famous silk weaving village of Van Phuc. In 2008, Ha Tay was merged into Hanoi, and Ha Dong officially became an urban district of the capital. This event opened a new chapter, transforming Ha Dong from a peaceful suburb into one of the most vibrant areas of Hanoi. Over the past decade, Ha Dong has witnessed rapid changes in infrastructure and the economy. Numerous major projects have been launched, such as the Cat Linh – Ha Dong urban railway line and modern urban areas like Duong Noi, Van Phu, and ParkCity Hanoi. The emergence of large shopping centers like AEON Mall Ha Dong and Melinh Plaza Ha Dong has not only improved the quality of life but also made Ha Dong an attractive destination for residents and investors. Economically, Ha Dong is gradually becoming a new center of the southwest region of Hanoi, blending tradition with modernity. Key economic sectors include real estate, services, trade, and handicrafts. Among these, Van Phuc silk maintains its importance as a cultural symbol, attracting both domestic and international tourists. Currently, Ha Dong has a population of over 400,000 people and an area of 49 km². The district is well-planned, with modern transportation systems, parks, and green residential areas. However, under the pressure of urbanization, Ha Dong faces several challenges such as population management, environmental improvements, and ensuring a balance between development and cultural preservation. In the future, Ha Dong aims to become a sustainable development center of Hanoi. Plans include upgrading infrastructure, developing green projects, and preserving traditional identity so that Ha Dong is not only modern but also a desirable place to live, where the past and future blend in a thriving lifestyle. ***** In this video, you will experience a driving tour exploring Ha Dong – a land rich in historical and cultural significance, as well as modern development in Hanoi.
