Pismo Beach is one of the few places in California where you can still legally off-road driving directly on the sand. The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), just south of Pismo Beach, is particularly famous for its expansive sand dunes and allows off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to roam freely. Oceano Dunes area is a prime spot for off-road enthusiasts, with miles of open sand dunes that range in difficulty. Visitors can bring their own ATVs, dune buggies, dirt bikes, or 4x4 vehicles, or rent them from local shops. You can also camp right on the sandy Oceano Dunes within designated areas, offering a unique beach camping experience combined with off-road adventure. A day-use or camping permit is required to access the Oceano Dunes. Permits can be purchased on-site or online through the California State Parks website. Safety is a priority, so vehicles must adhere to speed limits (15 mph in some areas) and other rules to protect the dunes and wildlife. Portions of the dunes may be closed at certain times due to environmental reasons, such as protecting nesting snowy plovers. It’s a good idea to check in advance for any restrictions.
