One of the key concepts in music composition is thematic transformation, a technique where a musical theme, melody, or motive evolves throughout a piece to represent a narrative journey. This idea originated with Beethoven's motivic development and was fully utilized by Franz Liszt for its narrative power. Thematic transformation involves altering a theme's rhythm, harmony, phrasing, and articulation, causing it to metamorphose into something new. This technique is not only a clever way to structure large-scale musical works but also serves to guide the listener through the emotional and dramatic progression of the music. Composer Arsentiy Kharitonov demonstrates thematic transformation using the main theme from his piano concerto (I movement). He highlights how a slow, expressive theme, initially played by the violins, can be manipulated for dramatic expansion. He shows how the theme's rhythmic basis can be twisted to create an opposite character. Furthermore, the pitches of the original theme can be used to create a subject for a (fugue) fugato section, showing its versatility.
