Machining a Flywheel Drive Plate for a 1200HP CAT Engine!

We’re up against the clock machining a custom drive plate for a 1200HP Caterpillar C32 V12 engine our customer needs back today! We’ve got a massive flywheel from a CAT C32 V12 out of a 777 haul truck, and our job is to make a precision drive plate so the engine can be tested on the dyno. We start by marking out a 16mm steel plate, cutting it to rough size with the gas axe, and setting it up in the lathe to face and ream a perfect centre fit for the coupling pin. From there, it’s over to the mill where we use the PCD function on the DRO to drill and tap all the bolt holes — eight for the drive coupling and six to mount into the flywheel. Once the coupling’s bolted to the plate, it goes back in the lathe for final machining on the outer diameter. Then comes the next challenge — drilling the matching holes in the flywheel itself. It’s so big we have to do it in two setups on the mill and move the ram to reach the final holes. Between cutting, machining, and drilling, there’s no room for error on this rush job, everything has to line up perfectly before it leaves the shop 🔥 Join our channel: We upload new videos every Friday at 5pm AEST!
