The Haqqani network emerged as a radical Islamist group that quickly became one of the most deadly and well-connected insurgent groups in the world with ties to the Afghan mujahideen, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and the Haqqani network has alleged connections to Pakistan and Iran as well. Once the Taliban captured the Afghan capital of Kabul, the Taliban promoted the founder of the Haqqani network to the role of head of domestic security which has already had disastrous consequences for the people of Afghanistan. The rise of the Haqqani network has put the United States in a tough position since the US needs to cooperate with Pakistan to combat al-Qaeda, but Pakistan has allegedly been the primary source of funding for Afghan insurgent groups like the Haqqani network.
