In May 2025, we embarked on a journey through Western Sichuan, the mountainous and "wild" region west of the Chengdu plains. It was an adventure which would take us through some of China's most diverse and dramatic vistas, from snow capped peaks to picturesque grasslands dotted with grazing yaks and pretty Tibetan villages. But besides being China's fourth largest megacity and a hub for finance and gateway to Western China, the city has a rich history dating back over 2400 years, and is a trove of cultural experiences from shrines and gardens to bustling street markets and tranquil teahouses. Amongst them, the Wuhou Shrine which takes one back in time to the Three Kingdoms Era, the bustling markets of Jinli Pedestrian Street and Kuan Zhai Alley, People's Park for a glimpse of the laid back and communal local culture which Chengdu is known for, and Du Fu Cottage, the former residence of one of the Tang Dynasty's most celebrated poets, set in bamboo groves with beautifully landscaped gardens, courtyards and pavilions. Not to mention, Taikoo Li Shopping Centre, a classy fusion of the modern with the traditional and the dazzling Night Cruise on the Jinjang River which flows through Chengdu. Also features the Chengdu cultural stage show, "Finding Tianfu".
