Cowichan Valley’s Abandoned Sawmill Turned Go-Kart Track | Vancouver Island History | Youbou BC

SUBSCRIBE HERE:    / @destination.x   This video turned out to be more than I was planning to film and document. This follows the story of the small town, Youbou, on Vancouver Island. Youbou was original founded as a sawmill town in the 1900's that turned out to be one of the largest logging areas within the province. The sawmill that employed 200+ employees for over 70 years was unfortunately demolished in 2001 putting all those employees out of work. This took a drastic toll on Youbou's economy and all those that call(ed) it home. The closure of the mill would open up the door to a new kind of economic opportunity. A year after the mill was torn down, a local Vancouver Island go-kart racing group would make a temporary home on the grounds of where the beloved sawmill used to be. While this stage of history in Youbou didn't last long, it's just another section in the never dying towns history showing that no matter what is thrown at it Youbou has survived and in one way or another has always prospered.
