The Canoe Fight was a Creek War engagement that took place on the Alabama River between Clarke and Monroe Counties, Alabama. Fought on November 12, 1813, it sparked a legend that continues to reverberate this day. One dugout canoe - carrying frontiersmen Sam Dale, Jeremiah Austill, James Smith, and a free Black man known only as Caesar - crashed against another carrying a party of Red Stick Creek warriors. The two sides battled with war clubs, musket butts, and bayonets in a fight for survival that was witnessed by hundreds of citizen soldiers and Red Stick warriors from both sides of the Alabama River. Also known as the Canoe Battle, the fight was part of the Creek War of 1813-1814 and the War of 1812 on the Gulf Coast.
