Explore the history and unique stories behind our region's Forgotten Infrastructure on Trail of History. In Belmont, meet the folks of Belmont Trolley working to return historic streetcars to the rails once used by the Piedmont and Northern Railroad. Then over in Fort Mill,SC, learn about our region's earliest roads by exploring abandoned segments of Nation Ford Road, But road’s weren’t the only way to move goods around. In the 1820’s the state of South Carolina invested heavily in canals to move goods up and down the Catawba River. We’ll explore the ruins of Landsford Canal and see why this piece of infrastructure built in 1823 only operated for about a decade. Lastly, we head up to Catawba County to get a first hand look at one of two remaining original covered bridges in North Carolina and find out why they cover a bridge at all.
