Then, in a workshop I participated in via the Earth Ethics Institute, I encountered a striking concept, accompanied by an image, called The Culture Tree. It depicted the different aspects of culture, drawing parallels between human culture and the canopy of a tree (the Surface level of culture), the trunk of the tree (the Shallow level of culture), and the roots of the tree (the Deep level of culture). In essence, this concept explores why it is so difficult for people to change and adopt new habits and ways of living. Some of our ideas are so deeply, unconsciously engrained within us and within the groups we belong to that it seems impossible to imagine a world that operates on a different set of beliefs. Once we become aware of the reasons that we hold certain beliefs—and think, react, and behave in certain ways—we take the first step to being more intentional with how we live our lives.
