Chatham and Discovery Islands are just off the shores of Oak Bay, and a great place to get away. But the Songhees Nation says the islands play an important role in the history and future of its people. And the half of Discovery that is not a Provincial Park is private reserve land. The Songhees say people need to know that, so they are stepping up patrols of the islands and asking people to stay off their land for now. There is evidence there of parties, campfires and tenting sites all over the island, and the Songhees Nation says the damage is destroying its homeland. If you are caught trespassing on reserve land, you could face a fine of $1000 or 30 days in jail, or both. Follow Louise Hartland on Twitter: / ctvnewslouise
