But we gotta go back to April 22, 2012. Just a regular season game between the Thunder and Lakers. Some real hardcore fans may remember that as the date that this happened. Damn bruh. Also, KD, Harden, Westbrook, good times. But I know this game for another reason: Kobe’s defense. Kobe, a 33 year old, took it on himself to guard a 23 year old Westbrook for the game. And it worked. Kobe hounded Westbrook the whole night, at times not letting Westbrook even get to the ball. The game would go into double overtime, Durant had 32, but Westbrook couldn’t buy a shot. The Lakers and Thunder would meet those playoffs and well the Thunder would wipe the floor with the Lakers. Kobe had 42 in the last game, but the Thunder were on the rise. The Thunder were just a better team and that was the end of that, until the 2012 olympics. Durant, Westbrook, Harden, and Kobe all were on the team. And Kobe decided to guard Westbrook for all their entire training camp and all practices. Throughout that entire olympics, he was apparently talking trash to Westbrook and Durant. So much so, that there were reports that Westbrook and KD were fed up. Kobe was talking about how the Lakers would beat the Thunder, that the Thunder had no shot, that the Lakers would retake the top dog. This was also the summer that Kobe and Kyrie talked trash. Kobe was one busy man that summer. Also keep in mind that Kevin Durant had just finished 2nd in MVP voting, but Kobe had finished 4th, Kobe was still one of the best players in the league, had been for years. Woj said that Kobe was trying to tell Russ, “you know you should be winning scoring titles, I don’t know why you’re letting Kevin win scoring titles”. So now it’s the 2012-2013 season. The Thunder have traded Harden away in one of the dumbest moves of all time cause they didn’t want to pay him an extra $4 mil. December 7 2012, the Lakers face the Thunder, without Nash and Gasol. And this time, Kobe wasn’t guarding Westbrook, it was Chris Duhon, a recipe for disaster. Russ and Durant hadn’t forgotten those words, especially Russ who had heard the most from Kobe that summer so when the game starts, Westbrook comes out with a three. And another, a jam, an and one, Westbrook could not be stopped. I mean man’s even hit this and rolled over. By the end of the half, Russ had made 5 three pointers and had 27 points. He scored from literally everywhere. Maybe he was tryna show that he could be the leading scorer in the NBA, but damn did he go off. In the second half though, it was Kevin Durant that was the steady hand. It wasn’t like Kobe went down without a fight, it’s just that KD and Russ were keeping the Thunder the top dogs, doing exactly what Kobe said they wouldn’t. Durant also has immense respect for Kobe, he’s put him at 1B all time, but KD is also no pushover, he’s just quiet and let’s his game be disrespectful. In their third meeting, it was a bit different. Kobe guarded Westbrook who shot 6 of 22 from the field and there was even some tension between Westbrook and Kobe in the third quarter, there were words exchanged although we don’t know what was said. Kobe had 21 points, 14 assists, and 9 rebounds, putting the Thunder away so maybe Kobe was on to something. The Lakers were making a reboot in the middle of their bad season, and Kobe guarding Westbrook seemed to work, until that 4th game. Kobe got hurt early and had to leave. He did come back and so he wasn’t always on Westbrook, but Westbrook...he went off, with Kobe guarding him, without Kobe guarding him, he didn’t make a single three but had 37 points on over 50% from the field. He was literally unstoppable. The funny thing is that Westbrook would eventually also get scoring titles too. I know we all get on Westbrook for not playing the right way, not helping his team win, I do that too, but let’s all appreciate the passion and energy he plays with. I always wanna see Russ do well and this is the Russ I like to see. There are a few that have been able to take the trash talk from Kobe and get better. I’ve made a lot of videos on Kobe absolutely destroying people who trash talked him, but when you trash talk that much, sometimes you gonna get got, but Kobe took it with respect and just tipped his hat.
