Our fifth foray along the former Woodhead line sees us come up alongside cottages, cats, carvings and a couple of the lines most prolific station sites. Hazlehead, a small 2-platform local station home not only to the small village it serves is also on the junction of a long dismantled works railway branch to nearby Hepworth. The end of the day's wonder at Dunford Bridge is of course a far more different story as the once dark and forbidding mouths of Woodhead Tunnel lay waiting. There are two generations and stations alike with the electrified version coming second in the 1950s, sweeping over the steam era and most of its evidence. Some scant traces of both survive as you will discover with walls, sidings and scattered electrification bases. The single bore twin tunnels from the 1830s which are now sealed closed are sadly difficult to get a camera to, but the 25ft-diameter replacement, built to accomodate the 1500 DC overhead system is visible in full glory although guarded by impenetrable steel mesh. Somewhat originally the tunnel does still carry wires today albeit underfloor, with the unsightly pylons straddling the valley all the way from Wogden to Dunford all but now redundant and mostly removed.. Time will tell if the next segment, from Woodhead and Crowden will recieve the same treatment in due course. #woodhead #DunfordBridge #Hazlehead #Bullhouse #WogdenFoot #Penistone #WoodheadTunnel
