The Ashland Train Day 2-and-a-half years in the making finally arrived on April 30th, and I was there along with a few other people to mark the occasion. 0:00 - CSX Q410 The early bird gets the stack train - I arrived in town shortly after 5 AM, not quite early enough to catch I136 in its entirety. After parking where the FFVmobile would be safely out of the way of the day's festivities and schlepping the camera gear up to the station platform, the first full catch of the morning was Q410. ET44AH 3344 and ES40DC 5358 led the way, with fresh-looking CM44AH 7231 helping out as the DPU. 7:08 - CSX I135 The consolation prize after missing most of I136 was catching its northbound counterpart as it passed the station at sunrise. Motive power was provided by ES44AH 3027 and ES40DC 5481 up front and ES44AH 3175 on DPU duty. 12:13 - Northeast Regional 164 Q415's little whoopsie down in Richmond the day before created a dilemma for some of the regionals. The normal route for turning their consists was blocked while the derailment cleanup continued, so the decision was made to send the affected trains back north with the original power in tow on the rear. Northeast Regional 164 was the first, bracketed by P42s 122 and 144. 14:39 - Amtrak 52, Auto Train We added a few more hardy souls to the platform population in time for the passage of the northbound Auto Train, led by P40s 814 and 832. 17:31 - CSX I032 While street preparations took place on either side, intermodal hotshot I032 ran up the middle. ET44AH 3259 had the place of honor on the head end, with ES44AH 999 tucked into the consist further back. 22:52 - Northeast Regional 82 Train Day setup was in full swing as Northeast Regional 82 rolled into town behind P40 835. While occasional P40 appearances on the regionals or Silver Star aren't completely outside the realm of possibility, this was the first time I can recall seeing the 835 on something other than the Auto Train. 24:48 - Northeast Regional 88 Unlike the 82 that preceded it, Northeast Regional 88 sported a perfectly normal consist. 26:06 - CSX Q300 With 19 minutes to go before the official start of Train Day, Q300 rolled up the street behind ES44AH 782 and AC4400CW 145. The conductor stepped out of the front of the lead unit to wave to those gathered trackside. 30:44 - Northeast Regional 194 With Train Day underway, the lid was off the quiet zone and the trains were told to 'make plenty of noise' through town. Northeast Regional 194 gave the first demonstration of the temporary order as it arrived with P42 136 leading and P42 3 in tow on the rear. 32:08 - Amtrak 89, Palmetto Not to be outdone, the engineer at the throttle of P42 183 put on another horn show as the southbound Palmetto parted the crowd. 33:35 - CSX Q301 ES40DC 5363 and AC4400CW 411 had a healthy consist of loaded Waste Management trash containers in tow as they rolled down Center Street past enthusiastic onlookers, most of whom were blissfully unaware of the cargo - until they caught a whiff. 36:19 - Amtrak 79, Carolinian The Carolinian regaled the crowed with another horn show as it passed slowly behind P42 158. 37:40 - Doing A 360 I took advantage of a lull in the train action to take a 360-degree look around at the Center Street crowd. The displays also stretched for several blocks in either direction along England Street, with additional space at a nearby strip mall. 38:42 - CSX I031 (well, most of it) Swimming in a sea of distraction, I managed to miss the head end of I031 and took my place to capture what I could of the rest. 43:21 - Amtrak 92, Silver Star The American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners (AAPRCO) convention in Miami had just wrapped up the day before, and the cars would be split into small groups to return to DC on the Silver Star before going their separate ways. Tucked in behind P42s 181, 78, and 171 were 'Northern Dreams', 'Northern Sky', and 'Hollywood Beach'. 44:56 - Northeast Regional 195/Amtrak 90, Palmetto The official Train Day proceedings ended at 4 PM, but the crowd lingered for quite a while after. There were still plenty of people on hand as P42 48 arrived and departed with Northeast Regional 195, meeting the northbound Palmetto behind P42 77. In a shocking upset, the winner of this year's hornshow contest was neither Amtrak nor CSX - it was the Cadillac Escalade crossing at England Street after the Palmetto passed by. 47:00 - Amtrak 53, Auto Train The crowd was just about back to a normal Saturday level as P40s 832 and 814 returned south with another load of Florida vacationers and their vehicles. 48:47 - CSX Q415 It passed so quickly. The crew of Q415 greeted the remaining onlookers as the train marched down Center Street behind ES44AH 844 and SD40-3 4080, with ES44AH 806 as the rear DPU.
