Kracauer und die Formate des Populären« Kracauer hat für das Feuilleton der Frankfurter Zeitung am Fließband Beiträge geschrieben. Einige der bekanntesten sind bereits für sich als Serie angelegt: Die kleinen Ladenmädchen gehen ins Kino etwa oder Die Angestellten. Serien verdanken ihre Popularität der Massenkultur, zu der Kracauer nicht nur als missvergnügter Ideologiekritiker Distanz wahrt, sondern ihr als teilnehmender Beobachter auch entgegenkommt. Im Vortrag soll es um die politischen Anliegen gehen, die seinen Sinn fürs Populäre wachhalten. Denn daran hängen Schicksalsfragen für sein journalistisches Metier: unter der verschärften Medienkonkurrenz erodiert die Öffentlichkeit der Presse. Siegfried Kracauer on Masses and Metropolis« Siegfried Kracauer is educated as an architect at the time when Adolf Loos denounces a close connection between ornament and crime in a paper of the same title. Despite the widespread repression of ornament in design and society that follows, Kracauer himself keeps emphasizing the importance of ornament to architectural and urban experience. To be sure, Kracauer soon demonstrates how mass ornaments are exploited by an industry of entertainment, which reflects capitalist society at large. Here, the process of production reduces reason to a narrow ratio. On the other hand, Kracauer claims that a utopian Reason remains at play, not least by way of certain ornaments which allow for the articulation of complexity in human life. In this context, the question arises whether cities generate ornamental features that may challenge instrumental ratio and, furthermore, promote urban culture as a realm of human coexistence and critical reflection. In short, what are the conditions of urban ornaments in the modern city? Siegfried Kracauer addresses this issue in several genres, conceptual contexts, and across a wide range of topics. This lecture explores how an experimental reflection on masses and ornament – spanning architecture, social issues, and urban history – comes about in Kracauer’s writings from the 1920s and 1930s, a period during which the urban condition pervades – but also challenges – novel, essays and historiography.
