Music: an original composition by T Mark Rogers. Images: please find a list of credits below. Having recently read the wonderful book, ‘The Seabird’s Cry’ by Adam Nicolson, I decided to put together some images of the 10 species he explores, alongside a new composition. The book won the 2018 Wainwright Golden Beer Book Prize - awarded every year to the author of the book that best reflects the ethos of renowned nature writer Alfred Wainwright to inspire readers to explore the outdoors and care for nature. After 60 million years of extreme living, the world population of seabirds has plummeted by 70% in the last 60 years. This wonderful book explores the lives of 10 different species of seabird, weaving together the human understanding, both scientific and poetic, to these pelagic creatures. A recurring idea throughout the book is of the Umwelt – “that each species lives in its own unique sensory universe, to which we may be partially or wholly blind”. Renowned for his writing about our relationship with nature, and landscape, Robert MacFarlane says of the book: “I was entranced by the beautiful deftness of the prose. This marvellous book inhabits with graceful ease both the mystic and the scientific, and remains alert to the vulnerability of these birds as well as to their wonder … a work that takes wing to the mind.” Credits: Many thanks to those who have generously shared their work under a Creative Commons Licence.
