After two weeks nonstop on the road across the region of New England, the excursion we have taken comes to an end. Something I've pondered for months is how although we have gone to so many different locations around New York State, we have yet to make our way to its capital city. Thus, instead of ending this tour immediately, I decided to give Albany, New York a nice little visit. Would you believe that New York's capital isn't New York City? Yeah, for whatever reason the Big Apple was given the rain check in favor of a place about 150 miles north. Here in the Empire State's capital region, Albany stands not only as the place of which this state's government is housed, but also as one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the United States. Historically settled by the Dutch as part of the 17th century's New Netherland colony, Albany's geographic location along the banks of the Hudson River held incredible importance no matter which nation was in control of it, and allowed the settlement to grow and prosper for hundreds of years. The intricate fancy design of the numerous buildings show off a remarkable story of this city's past and the sophisticated culture which has long existed here. Even despite a significant amount of rain, I had much fun exploring the major sights of Albany. From the capitol plaza, to the historic downtown, to the several quirks of the urban design, this city does not hold back to flaunt its character. This is a city truly fit for an empire, or an Empire State.
