Pete Martinez, v, stg / Valentin Martinez, g Okeh Mobile Recording Unit San Antonio, TX 14 Mar. 1928 W400511-A “Yodel Blues–(Part 2)” (Valentine Martinez) OK 45224 Transferred with 3.0ML lateral stylus in Audiotechnica VMN70SP cartridge via Audiotechnica AT-LP120 Turntable. Declicked and EQ’d by Colin Hancock. Discographical Info and Research from Brian Rust’s Jazz Records, Chris Alvarado, Jason Saldana, Hunter Burgamy, and Colin Hancock. Recordings and Images from the Colin Hancock Collection. Here is a rare recording cut in San Antonio for Okeh in 1928 by duo of Pete and Valentin Martinez. The recording is an early example of San Antonio latino culture in an American context, and is a fantastic cross section of Blues, Country music, and Latino music styles that synthesizes much of what San Antonio was about. Indeed, Troy Floyd’s band recorded the same day that this title was cut, for context of the kind of music scene in that city. While both parts 1 and 2 of “Yodel Blues” are good, it seems that the duo had really reached their stride on the second side, and they play with an infectious slow swaggering lope, driven by Valentin Martinez’s rhythm guitar.
