The ongoing war in Ukraine results in an increasing number of civilian casualties every day. Surgeons at non-urgent hospitals must acquire new skills to deliver qualified and timely care to patients with injuries related to the conflict. “Given the presence of such patients, I had to pursue further education and obtain additional qualifications.” said surgeon Roman Bezuhlyi, who works in the city close to the frontline. Roman is among dozens of surgeons and anesthesiologists from key regions across Ukraine who gathered to prepare themselves for real-life scenarios they may encounter working in austere conditions. WHO Office in Ukraine supports the Hostile Environment Surgical Training (HEST) course, designed by the David Nott Foundation to equip surgeons with crucial skills for handling trauma and war injuries.
