Usually headphones designed for the best possible sound quality and those designed for the best possible noise blocking (often used in loud environments by pilots, target shooters, etc.) aren't one and the same—in fact they aren't even made by the same sort of companies—so you can't have both aspects in one set of 'phones. Listening in a dead quiet environment is critical, however, in order to hear the faint passages in a wide dynamic range recording so the quiet parts aren't masked by (i.e., buried under) the faint noise from, say, one's desk fan, room A/C, street noise from an open window, etc.. Combining both great sound quality and great noise blocking in one set of headphones has been a longtime goal for me and in this video I show how to easily upgrade one of the most popular studio monitor headphones of all time, the Sony MDR-7506 (originally released as the MDR-V6 by their consumer division), into a great NOISE BLOCKING set. These now provide both great sound quality and great isolation from environmental noise in just one set of headphones! WOO_HOO! I also explain, and demonstrate, the science behind it all. 00:00 How to easily mod the headphones for noise blocking 06:29 Demo of the sound isolation by holding the earcups together 08:18 Disclaimers and safety warnings 08:35 The science explained with diagrams/animations 10:15 Why noise BLOCKING beats noise CANCELLING 13:25 Earphone cup design 17:56 Computer-generated sound diffraction analysis 21:10 Foam vs. Gel earpad springiness 23:00 Gel has a better airtight seal to the ear 23:49 Coiled Cords reduce noise transmission to the earcup 26:31 Acoustic Impedance Barrier, AIB, defined 27:40 Air/liquid AIB demonstrated 31:04 The secret to noise blocking is multi-layer AIBs
