Headed out on another trip chasing Murray Cod. These have got to be the number one fish of all Australian freshwater species and I still need to catch a decent one! This trip I decided to head out into the gorge country around the north western slopes of NSW. This is country I've been meaning to get up and fish for a while. The Severn river starts somewhere in the mountains and then flows west into Pindari Damn. It flows out of Pindari damn and then northwest to its junction with the Macintyre River near where I stayed. I camped solo for three days in my new rooftop tent, exploring the epic granite gorge that the Severn River snakes its way through just before the Macintyre River junction (those rocks are slippery when wet 😂). What a spot! I'd camp there any time, fishing or not fishing. Being winter time the fishing was pretty tough, and this was a brand new spot for me to figure out. I'd love to go back and chase some of the Murray Cod that get up there around Spring time when there's much more food and just wildlife in general getting around. The gorge reminded me a lot of the spot I chase Australian Bass in back home in the Blue Mountains; it's a good hike in but once you're there, there's plenty of land based fishing available, along the whole bank of the river almost. The river is fairly small, meaning it's easier to cover more of it as you cast lures moving along the bank. After putting in hours and hours of casts each day I did manage to get a just few Murray Cod and one banged up YellowBelly out this wild river (the hardest part was loosing four fish on day two). It's interesting to see how slender and skinny the Cod are in this part of the river, as if they have spent a lot of their energy fighting the current. No giant Murray Cod yet but I'll be back up to explore more of the Gorge Country and keep trying to catch some properly big Murray Cod whenever I can (going to be a lot of trips at this rate).
