Joe De Gregorio presents New Orleans Blues: a tribute to Ellis Marsalis between jazz history and legendary recordings Jazz pianist and composer Joe De Gregorio continues the release of his discographic trilogy with the third single, New Orleans Blues, out March 1. The project unfolds as a curated selection of twelve tracks drawn from three albums recorded within the same year — a true artistic statement that blends tradition, sonic exploration, and deep reverence for jazz history. The single is part of the album For Blues’ Sake (In Blues), recorded in one of the most iconic locations in American music: the historic Van Gelder Studio — a sonic temple where some of the most important jazz recordings were created, including masterpieces associated with the legendary Blue Note label. Van Gelder Studio represents far more than a recording space: it is a mythical environment where artists such as Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, and McCoy Tyner recorded landmark sessions. De Gregorio performed on that very same piano, entering into a symbolic dialogue with a living tradition carried forward through new interpretations. The session began as an intimate duo recording: piano and bass performed in the same room, without overdubs, preserving the natural interaction between musicians. Joining this essential setting is special guest, legendary bassist Ron Carter — a central figure in modern jazz history. The recording was later enriched by drums from Peter Erskine, added in a second phase — a rare production choice that creates a temporal dialogue between performances while preserving the intensity of the original session. This approach makes the recording unique: not only in sonic conception, but also because it documents an exceptionally rare collaboration between Carter and Erskine. The sessions were overseen by renowned recording engineer Maureen Sickler, longtime collaborator and assistant to Rudy Van Gelder and current guardian of the studio’s sonic legacy. Her involvement adds another layer of authenticity and historical continuity to the project. New Orleans Blues is an original composition by De Gregorio drawn from his cycle 24 Jazz Variations for Piano, a tribute to the language of the blues. The piece is dedicated to the memory of Ellis Marsalis — a foundational figure in New Orleans jazz and mentor to generations of musicians. Through this homage, De Gregorio celebrates the city’s pianistic tradition, weaving lyricism, groove, and improvisation into a musical narrative that is both personal and deeply rooted in history. With this release, Joe De Gregorio’s trilogy affirms itself as a project that unites memory and innovation — a recording that converses with the giants of the past while asserting a contemporary voice capable of transforming tradition into living experience.
