#macvsog #vietnam #specialforces This is probably the most complete description of the weapons used by the covert unit MACV-SOG in the Vietnam War. MACV-SOG stands for Military Assistance Command-Vietnam Studies and Observations Group. This was an elite unit which ran secret missions “over the fence” into Cambodia, Laos and North Vietnam. SOG missions included reconnaissance patrols into non permissive environments, ambushes, sabotage, rescuing downed pilots, Prisoner Of War (POW) camp raids and psychological operations. SOG was a secret unit ran by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and 5th Special Forces Group. It was such a covert unit, it was not known until the 1990s. Nearly 20 years after the Vietnam War ended. SOG was made up of special operations personnel from the Special Forces Green Berets, Navy Seals, Air Force Special Operations and Marine Corps Force Recon. The list of weapons they used is extensive. SOG used rifles such as the M-16 and Ak-47, carbines like the XM177 Colt Commandos, Sub Machine Guns like the Carl Gustaf M45 and M3 Grease Gun used in World War II. SOG also carried machine guns like the RPD, Stoner Model 63 and the M60 nicknamed “the Pig”. SOG teams also used a variety of hand grenades, 40mm grenade launchers, sniper rifles anti tank rockets, RPGs and various land mines. A variety of pistols and experimental weapons were also in the SOG arsenal. Almost EVERYTHING SOG used could also be equipped with a suppressor (silencer). All of which are included in this video.
