#santorini #greece #holidays The astounding village of Imerovigli, which stands at the highest point on the caldera at the north part of the island, holds the castle of Skaros, an attraction of great importance. It was the oldest and most significant fortified settlement and it used to be the capital of Santorini until the 18th century, before Fira. Skaros is called the immense promontory that lies on the seaward side of Imerovigli and is a symbol of Santorini. The fortress of Skaros was built on this cliff as a means of protection from the pirates that conquered the coasts of the Aegean Sea during the late Middle Ages. Its strategic position offered panoramic views on the shores and the connection with the rest of the village was feasible through a mobile wooden bridge. The whole fortified settlement was made of stone and it is remarkable the fact that within its narrow limits there were about 200 residences, churches, monasteries and streets that resembled a labyrinth. It is said that the castle was never conquered by anyone and was gradually destroyed by a series of volcanic eruptions and the earthquakes these induced throughout the years. Only a few remains have been left from this glorious fortress and you can witness as well the traces of the bridge. In the area, there are two notable chapels, those of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis opposite of Skaros and Panagia Theoskepasti, a lovely chapel built on the edge of the cliff in front of Skaros. Thanks to its gifted position, Skaros provides exclusive unequaled views on the volcano, the impressive caldera and the nearby islands. It is an ideal, peaceful place that offers striking images any time of the day. In addition, it is indicated for hiking. However, even if you don’t step on Skaros rock to explore the remnants, just the mere view of it and its perfect surroundings from Imerovigli village is totally fascinating and worthy.
