Leadership Is More Than Self-Development | Realignment, Systems & Sustainable Change (Part 1) There comes a point in leadership where personal excellence is no longer enough. Transformation invites us to actively engage the systems we lead within, recognising that lasting progress often depends on shaping environments where flourishing is possible for all. This video is Part 1 of a two-part leadership series where we explore the tension between inner work and the wider systems leaders operate within. Alberta Stevens begins with a story from her childhood that shaped how she learnt to interpret conflict, responsibility, and power. “Wan ahn bangle noh dey shake.” A single bangle does not make a sound. She explains how what sounded like wisdom slowly became a training ground for self-erasure. Years later, she began to see the same pattern emerge in her coaching work as many high capacity female leaders arrived in her coaching practice, burned out. Not because they lack skill, resilience, or ambition, but because they have been carrying the full burden of adaptation in environments that remain largely unexamined. More training. More coaching. More work on yourself. Meanwhile, the system stays exactly as it is. In this first conversation, Alberta explores why leadership development and coaching that focuses only on the individual are incomplete. “Yes, inner work matters. Personal agency matters. Responsibility matters. Sustainable, legacy-building leadership however, requires that inner transformation meets the world outside. Power, organisational culture, systems, and context must also be named and held in the room.” Within our 5Rs of Leadership Reinvention coaching framework, we work with leaders to ensure that personal development is held alongside systemic awareness. This happens through a three-movement model within the Realigning stage, which brings together capacity, context, and contribution. Realignment is the fifth movement in our 5Rs framework and will be the focus of my upcoming masterclass. In Part 2, Alberta explores what Realignment looks like in practice, how leaders discern where they can lead with integrity, and how to pursue meaningful contribution without self-erasure.
