Hey everyone in today's video we explain the mechanism for an intramolecular cyclization of a delta hydroxy acid to delta lactone. The cyclization of a delta hydroxy acid to a delta lactone involves the intramolecular reaction of the hydroxyl group (-OH) with the carboxylic acid group (-COOH) within the same molecule to form a cyclic ester, known as a lactone. The process includes nucleophilic attack, ring closure, and the expulsion of water to form the lactone. The resulting product is a cyclic ester, which is commonly encountered in organic synthesis and plays a significant role in the formation of natural products and pharmaceutical compounds.
