Set up of historian and ossuary site manager Karel Koubsky 11. SOUNDBITE (Czech) Karel Koubsky, Historian and ossuary site manager: "This ossuary was not present in an original version of the church. Actually the cemetery first became popular in 1273 when Henry as abbot of this region brought with him back from Palestine - the Holy Land - a handful of earth from Golgotha (where Jesus is believed to have been crucified). Henry sprinkled the earth over the cemetery. That was only place in Bohemia and maybe in central Europe where the cemetery contained a bit of the Holy Earth. The cemetery was respected as a part of the Holy Land and thus followed a number of legends. One legend says that a person who gets buried at the Church/Monastery cemetery will secure a place in paradise." 12. Various of bones and skulls in ossuary 13. Tourists in ossuary taking photo 14. SOUNDBITE (Czech) Karel Koubsky, Historian and ossuary site manager: "This ossuary is unique. That huge cemetery was destroyed after the Hussites (Bohemian) wars and bones were stored in the basement of the church. Historically is not clear who was the fist person to use bones and make the first bone ossuary decorations, however legend says it was a half-blind monk." 15. Tourist taking photos of the ossuary 16. SOUNDBITE (Czech) Father Andej, The Chapel of All Saints and Ossuary spokesman : "Those are bones of our ancestors and for people without faith that conclusion would be just fine when they see this. However, religious visitors would know about the other end of life - that such an end must be earned." 26. Tourists taking photos LEAD IN : A small church in the Czech Republic is attracting an increasing number of tourists each year. The church is home to an ossuary which is entirely decorated with human skulls and bones. STORYLINE : The Chapel of All Saints, commonly known as the Bone Church, is visited by some 10-thousand tourists a year. They make the trip to the town of Kutna Hora, a town about 70 kilometres (43 miles) east of the capital Prague to see the church's ossuary, a place where dead people's bones are stored. The ossuary is home to remains of about 40-thousand people and their bones have been used to decorate the buildings interior. The Chapel of All Saints and the neighbouring monastery were established in the 11th century but the ossuary came later, as historian and ossuary site manager Karel Koubsy explains. The church's cemetery didn't survive the Hussite or Bohemian Wars in the 14th century and the bones were dug up and stacked up around the church - first outside the building then later inside. Ossuary visitors are often surprised to see bones and skulls being used as decoration.
