Whiteout conditions cause multiple crashes, 100 car pileup, hazardous conditions for West Michigan

Both directions of I-196 are closed after a 100 car pileup and several jackknifed semi trucks on Monday. A multi-car pileup started forming on west I-196 from 32nd Avenue to 64th Street just after 10:20 a.m., and as of 12:20 p.m., evolved into a 100 car pileup including multiple jackknifed semi trucks, and an estimated 30 to 40 semi trucks involved overall, causing a complete closure of I-196 heading west and east for about 10 miles from Zeeland, Mich. to Hudsonville, Mich., according to Ottawa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) deputies and Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers. Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max Transit are being used to transport stranded motorists from the crash site, where winds are being recorded up to 40 mph with 6 to 12 inches of snow forecasted, to Hudsonville High School. Preliminarily outlooks show mostly fender benders, slide-offs and minor injuries, Ottawa County dispatchers said. OCSO deputies don't have a count on how many people are injured yet, however, they said none are known to be fatal at this time. Several inches of snow have already fallen across the region and more is on the way Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. The highest snow totals will be along and west of U.S. 131 where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 7 a.m. Tuesday. Snow totals will lessen further away from Lake Michigan. This light and powdery snow combined with gusty winds has already led to whiteout conditions. Whiteouts will remain possible at times throughout our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
