The Good Shepherd scene: Defector Walk In

This is a scene from the outstanding spy thriller The Good Shepherd. In it, a Soviet KGB officer has showed up at an American embassy wanting to defect. This was long before the internet, and communication was done by teletype - imagine two typewriters connected by a very long wire. To verify the "bona fides" of the potential defector the men need to ask the defector some questions, so they use the teletype. The KGB defector wants to speak directly to Matt Damon's character, so it's telephone or teletype. I imagine a similar scene took place when messages were traded like this between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
