Feria Modernista 2025 Alcoy, Spain

Alcoy will dedicate the 2025 Modernist Fair to Timoteo Briet, a figurehead of sober and elegant modernism. The 8th edition will be held from September 22 to 28, with the theme "The Restart of Beauty," in tribute to the architect on the centenary of his death. Modernist Fair 2025 Poster Last Friday, April 11, the presentation of the Alcoy Modernist Fair 2025 took place at the Rodes Urban Technology Park. This eighth edition will pay tribute to the architect Timoteo Briet Montaud (1859–1925). The Councilor for Tourism, Lorena Zamorano, led the event and praised the architect: "Timoteo Briet knew how to create modern, elegant, and functional architecture. His legacy is an essential part of Alcoy's visual identity. This fair is a tribute to a way of creating a city based on beauty." The official image of this edition, designed by David Pastor, was also presented during the event, where awards were presented to collaborating organizations. Mayor Toni Francés closed the event by stating, “Alcoy is a city marked by Modernism. Briet knew how to interpret this language with his own personality. His memory deserves to be at the center of our fair.” Timoteo Briet was born in Cocentaina in 1859. The grandson and son of bricklayers, the family moved to Alcoy when he was 12. Although his father wanted him to follow the family profession, Briet opted for training as an architect. He moved to Barcelona, where he met Vicente Pascual Pastor, with whom he would return to Alcoy after graduating in 1890. Despite sharing the same city, each adopted a different approach to Modernism: Briet opted for the more restrained and geometric Sezession style, while Pascual was influenced by the more exuberant Art Nouveau style. Briet worked on a wide variety of buildings: homes, extensions, facades, workshops, and even commercial entrances. Among his most notable works is the Laporta House, located on what is now Avenida País Valencià, where he used a combination of ashlar and green tiling, along with carefully designed iron elements. The interior features notable modernist pictorial decoration, likely attributed to the painter Francisco Laporta Valor, the brother of the developer of the renovation project. Briet also designed rear garages for the same property, combining solid brick and carved stone, and worked on his own home at 24 Calle San José, a narrow house between party walls that clearly reflects the Sezession style. Modernisme, as a movement, adopted different names and styles in different countries. While in Spain it was known as Modernisme, in other contexts it was referred to as Art Nouveau (France and Belgium) or Modern Style (United Kingdom). The Sezession emerged in Vienna in 1897, led by artists such as Gustav Klimt, who favored a more sober approach influenced by Byzantine icons. This was precisely the style Briet adopted, adapting it to the needs and industrial spirit of the city of Alcoy.
