This original archive film shows the town of Marigny ( Manche ) shortly after its liberation on 27 July 1944. The town was secured by the U.S. 1st Infantry Division working alongside Combat Command B of the 3rd Armored Division, during the opening phase of Operation Cobra. The footage captures the state of the town immediately after the fighting, with American forces moving through the streets and residents beginning to re-emerge following days of intense combat. Note: We have also added still imagery taken in the town square during the same time period. One of these shows a U.S. soldier resting against the storefront of the local 'Graineterie', a seed and grain shop, common in French towns and villages of the era. Marigny sat directly on the Axis defensive line south of Saint-Lô, and its capture was a key step in the Allied push toward Coutances and the wider breakout from Normandy.
