Many trauma patients require surgery -- often for fracture, and for some abdominal and head injuries. Head injuries are the leading cause of death in children who die from trauma. The Trauma Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has the surgical expertise to care for the most severe injuries of any kind, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. After surgery, patients are cared for in one of CHOP's inpatient units by a team of experienced trauma nurses and physicians. Social workers and child life specialists also work closely with the medical team to provide care for the child and the whole family.
