Knee Extension IS Your Number One Priority For Knee Rehabiliation The most important thing for you to do after a knee injury or a knee surgery is to make sure you get back your full terminal knee extension (knee straightening). Knee extension is the cornerstone of treatment that will set the stage for optimal rehab. Here are 6 problems that can arise with incomplete knee extension that can harm your progress: 1. Swelling in and around the knee 2. Pain on the inside of your knee 3. Pain in your opposite hip and low back 4. Reduced bending of your knee 5. Pain on the front of your knee 6. Pain in your calf on the same side While there are several ways to do this, passive weighted extension with a sandbag is my preferred technique. The sandbag should be placed just below the patella/kneecap while in a seated position with the heel supported on the seat of another chair. 20 lbs for 20 min twice a day is adequate to get the job done.
