You can also see them in his facial expressions. He happily follows the impulses of his hands and shows as most precious asset the lightness which is the result of hard work in music. Especially without the safety net of a band, there are always more ways to stumble, fall and lose the thread than ways to continue spinning this thread and to gain finesse and richness of form. Playfulness is probably the most primal grace of this trinity, early to be observed in children when they turn and twist found objects in order to gain new impressions from them. Animals also follow this instinct when they play with their prey before eating it. In contrast, wit is of a more goblin-like nature. The Grimm dictionary describes wit as an intellectual ability. For the purposes of improvisation, this means: The soloist maintains an overview in gliding flight wittingly arranging the elements of his playing in such a way that they form a coherent whole. Finally, ebullience is the delight of the hand in its possibilities. It is written all over Mark Whitfield's face. With souplesse and esprit, he shifts back and forth between complex patterns, compressing and stretching time at will and thus exploiting the freedom that the solo space offers him, in contrast to the usual accompanying role. This is a graceful balancing act on the tightrope of time: the listener relishes the soloist's idea, the twist and the emergence of new references. Lightness is of importance here as well. Only a virtuoso achieves this by pulling things out of the hat while at the same time following how and where they fall. Mark Whitfield demonstrates this in a relaxed manner. If proof were needed that music massages the convolutions of the brain, here it is. Auch seiner Mimik sind sie anzusehen. Vergnügt folgt er den Impulsen seiner Hände und zeigt dabei als kostbarstes Gut die Leichtigkeit, die in der Musik das Ergebnis schwerer Arbeit ist. Ganz besonders ohne den doppelten Boden einer Band gibt es stets mehr Arten, zu straucheln, abzustürzen und den Faden zu verlieren, als Arten, diesen Faden weiterzuspinnen und dabei an Finesse und Formenreichtum zu gewinnen. Der Spieltrieb ist wohl die urtümlichste Grazie dieser Dreiheit, früh zu beobachten beim Kind, wenn es Fundstücke dreht und wendet, um ihnen neue Eindrücke abzugewinnen. Auch Tiere folgen diesem Trieb, wenn sie mit ihrer Beute spielen, bevor sie sie verzehren. Demgegenüber ist der Spielwitz die koboldhaftere Natur. Das Grimmsche Wörterbuch umschreibt Witz als intellektuelles Vermögen. Für die Belange der Improvisation bedeutet dies: Der Solist wahrt im Gleitflug die Übersicht, er weiss die Elemente seines Spiels so anzuordnen, dass aus ihnen ein fassliches Ganzes entsteht. Die Spielfreude schliesslich ist das Ergötzen der Hand an ihren Möglichkeiten. Sie ist Mark Whitfield ins Gesicht geschrieben. Mit Souplesse und Esprit wechselt er zwischen komplexen Mustern hin und her, staucht und dehnt die Zeit nach Belieben und schöpft so die Freiheiten aus, die der Solo-Raum ihm bietet, im Gegensatz zur üblichen Begleiterrolle. Dabei gelingt ein schwebender Balanceakt auf dem Hochseil der Zeit: Der Hörer erfreut sich mit dem Solisten am Einfall, an der Wendung und am Entstehen neuer Bezüge. Auch hier ist Leichtigkeit gefragt. Nur ein Virtuose erreicht sie, indem er Dinge aus dem Ärmel schüttelt und zugleich verfolgt, wie und wohin sie fallen. Dies führt Mark Whitfield auf lockere Weise vor. Wenn es noch eines Beweises dafür bedürfte, dass Musik die Hirnwindungen massiert, hier wäre er. Text von Michel Mettler
