(19 Apr 2020) US President Donald Trump was questioned at a White House briefing on Saturday after seeming to suggest there could be a difference in the way lockdown measures are enforced in mosques during Ramadan, compared to measures put in place during Christian Easter celebrations. Trump was asked about his retweet of comments made by conservative writer Paul Sperry, who wrote: 'Let's see if authorities enforce the social-distancing orders for mosques during Ramadan like they did churches during Easter.' "I would say that there could be a difference and we'll have to see what will happen," Trump said. Trump said he had held a "tremendous call" with faith leaders on Friday that included discussion about a phased-in return to broader in-person worship after weeks of religious services largely shifting online in response to the coronavirus pandemic. When asked if he thought imams would not follow social distancing rules, he said he "did not think that at all," and that he would like to see them enforce the same rules imposed on Christian churches. During the briefing he also described what he saw as a "great disparity" in the US over how different religions were treated and talked about the "strong anti-Israel bent in Congress, with Democrats." 'I don't know what happened with our country, but the Christian faith is treated much differently than it was, and I think it's treated very unfairly,' he said.
