Anna Fornalczyk-Lipska (University of Warsaw) When considering Polish retranslations of canonical works of children’s literature (for example, Andersen’s and the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Barrie’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and others), one can notice that in many cases they were authored by university professors, usually from the field of language and literature. Also, they were often intended as polemical in relation to the earlier rendition(s), as retranslation is never neutral, but strongly challenges the validity of the previous translation (Pym 1998: 83). The focus of the proposed paper is on the specific group of translators-professors. What is their main motivation, or the meta-telos their work on a new translation? Is it more personal (undertaking a challenge, translating for the child within themselves/within their own environment) or more professional (providing readers with a new, more “faithful” version, possibly responding to the changing concepts of childhood and the child reader)? Are they inclined more to represent cultural otherness, acting as ambassadors of the source-language culture, or do they want to fit in the literary system and expectations of the receiving culture, producing a text consistent with the dominating norm of this culture? The study is based on an analysis of the translations and broadly understood paratexts (including academic papers authored by the translators in question).
