The cigars were stored for a minimum of three weeks in a Boveda acrylic humidor with 69% RH Boveda packs and a Boveda Butler prior to review. 00:53 Cigar Overview The Velvet Rat cigar was first released as a limited series in 2012. Five years later, in 2017, it joined the full lineup. It is part of the Liga Privada range and is a Unique Series ("Unico Serie"). The Vitola, a 6.25 x 46 Lonsdale, is what gives it the Velvet Rat moniker. Manufactured in Esteli, Nicaragua, the cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Brazilian Mata Fina binder, and Nicaraguan/Honduran filler in an accordion bunching style. This is similar to the Drew Estate Liga Privada No 9 that we've reviewed previously. 02:03 Look & Feel At a first glance, the Drew Estate Velvet Rat's dark chocolate-toned wrapper appears to be dripping with oils; it is almost reminiscent of chocolate fondant. The roll is rustic as the Liga Privada No. 9 with a firm spring. Some veins are visible though they lend to the rustic charm of the cigar. On the foot, the aromas include leather, labdanum, gorman, and tonka bean. There is also a fruity essence present. 02:48 Prelight The prelight draw of the Velvet Rat is ideal. Once more, it delivers a fruity, caramelized note along with chocolate, pralines, and agarwood. Agarwood is generally used for making oud which is common in perfumes. 03:42 First Third In the first third, the Liga Privada Velvet Rat is unctuous. It is sweet and flavorsome while remaining complex. The burn line is almost perfectly straight. There is also a taste of charred sweetness and burnt rosemary. 04:44 Second Third Into the second third, the flavor profile has evolved slightly into a wood taste. There is also some bitter characteristics with an aromatic property. The rosemary experienced earlier is now closer to charred bay leaves. The woody taste is quite fragrant, closer to rosewood than the more common oak as the thickness and body of oak are not present. The dark chocolate has transitioned closer to cacao nib. The second third is definitely stronger in terms of body but, again, the evolution is not too substantial. 06:19 Final Third In the final third, the cigar continues the excellent smoke production that began in the second third; the burn line remains exceptional. The woodiness detected earlier is still present, though it's closer to Cherrywood at this point. The subtle fruitiness mentioned previously is still present and is accompanied by black pepper and succulent treacle molasses. Overall, this Drew Estate Velvet Rat cigar is quite complex with many nuances throughout the experience. The mouthfeel is velvety and heavy on the palate though not overwhelmingly so. The astringency is balanced and I did not experience excessive dryness or salivation. Indeed, the palate stimulation is is nicely distributed throughout the mouth. 08:36 Burn & Construction This Drew Estate cigar has an excellent draw with nice airflow all the way through. The narrow ring gauge merits a slow and patient smoking experience that will prevent the cigar from getting too hot. Moreover, the burn angle was excellent and required no "touch ups" during the smoke. 09:18 Overall Experience Beginning with the band - it looks exactly the same as the Liga Privada except it says "Velvet Rat" and "Exclusively for the Boss" (in Spanish). The box is a 10-ct box. When it comes to value, this Velvet Rat is slightly more expensive than the Liga Privada No. 9 as it costs arounds $16.70 for a single. Nevertheless, this is a unique cigar worthy of trying. As far as occasion, the Velvet Rat can be considered formal due to its vitola and price.
